Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such medications need to be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a intense resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural support.
