Toy Story 5 Teaser Pits Woody and Buzz Versus a Digital Device

It has been 30 anniversary since the original Toy Story film was released, launching Pixar as a major animation studio and introducing audiences to iconic figures like the cowboy doll (the actor) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed recently, offering a glimpse into the storyline but leaving viewers curious how it will resolve the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Gang

The preview reveals Bonnie — who inherited the toy collection when he grew up — getting a brand new plaything, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She gets her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.

Theoretically, the frog-shaped tablet will animate just like the rest of her playthings. However, the characters appear to consider it as a danger coming to replace them, which it probably is.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

An element the teaser doesn't touch on is why Woody is returned with his companions in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), traveling with a carnival and assisting prize toys locate loving owners.

Surely, the filmmakers will address the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him appear in the familiar setting without warning is a little strange, however. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have returned with Woody. And what about the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?

Continuity from the Last Installment

Fortunately, some aspects are carrying over from the prior film. The last thing Woody did before setting off for his fresh path was pass his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (the voice actor), leaving her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser displays the insignia pinned to her outfit.

Hopefully she is still the driving force among the group.
