In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Discussions Underway
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
